DC9 CONCERT OF THE WEEK: Crystal Stilts

The Crystal Stilts: Distortion in their songs, distortion in their pictures.

As the home of alterna-queer dance party Taint and performance night Crack, 9th St.'s DC9 has proven itself as a queer-friendly business for close to five years. Please continue to support them by checking out this concert. (Yes, this is a paid advertorial but I'm doing TNG full time now and need to pay my rent:)

Crystal Stilts — not to be confused with Crystal Castles, Crystal Skulls or Crystal Antlers — are... actually, I just lost my train of thought. Why do so many bands these days have "crystal" in their title? Is it a sign of the second coming of Cryst? Who knows.

What I meant to say it that New York City fuzz-rockers Crystal Stilts are coming to DC9 this Sunday and they will be worth checking out. Their debut LP, Alight of Night, boasts lazy, distortion-heavy rock songs that are half Jesus and Mary Chain and half gravely-voiced Magnetic Fields. It's the kind of sound that generally works the best in small venues and the intimacy of DC9 should make it a perfect spot for listening.

Now seriously- if anyone has a better explanation for all these "crystal" bands I would love to hear it. While you're pondering that you can check out a Crystal Stilts playlist below the fold.

Crystal Stilts play Sunday, March 15, at DC9. (1940 9th St., NW.) Doors at 8:30. Tickets are $10 in advance. You can buy them now.
