Wednesday Night Scavenger Hunt
Written by Beatriz who lives in Herndon and works in DC, this post asks for advice for a girl who has a great supporting cast of friends to go out with, but doesn't know where to go.
This Wednesday I set out with some friends to see what was going on in the DC night Lez scene. I found out not a lot before 10:30pm.
We started out in Fab Lounge, where I heard that there would be a Lady's Happy Hour. We showed up at happy hour around 6pm to find that my three friends and I were the only ones there. Disappointed, we asked around for another place to go and were directed to Jacks.
We walked the couple of blocks to get there, chatting with a Support for Obama girl on the way, and got to Jacks about 8:30pm. There were some people having dinner, clumps of ladies here and there, but no happy hour crowd there ether. The bartender said that since some club that used to be around the corner closed, their happy hour crowd went away. Giving it one last try, we left for Be Bar, where we were assured there would be a crowd.
We got there about 9pm and an event had just concluded so everyone was clearing out. The very cute blonde bartender was quick with the strong drinks, so we didn't notice that an hour had passed and we were again the only people bouncing around. Closer to 10:30pm it seemed that someone opened a spout and all these girls came pouring in. It was a great diverse crowd and I even spotted someone that I went to high school with. Unfortunately, it was very cliquey with no real mixing going on.
Living in Herndon, I didn't get home until after midnight. If I were 20 and could miss my early morning English Lit class this would be fine, but I'm not. What is a Lez girl from the burbs to do? There are no "gay clubs" in Northern Virginia. Perhaps there are places where we might congregate unbeknown to the general public, but I haven't found them.
Is it a cultural thing? Are we intrinsically nocturnal creatures? Should I sell my condo and rent a broom closet closer to the city?
Any advice on more happy hour locations in NOVA and DC would be greatly appreciated!
Editors note: State of DC's lesbian nightlife offerings was recently covered in a two-part Washington Blade article by our own Ms. Cavanaugh: Part 1, and Part 2.

i live in reston and have gone a few times to the dulles triangles meetings. they get together thurdays at the sheraton just off sunrise valley. the crowd is mostly older (though not entirely) and mostly male (though certainly not entirely). they're always super friendly though. last time i was there the organizer was lamenting how hard it was to hang onto the women. they would come to the happy hours until they'd met someone, then were never seen again. that kind of suggests that there will be single ladies though!
The NoVa lesbians love Freddie's, at least they did the last time I was there. But that was on a Friday evening.
I went to Fab Lounge last night and it was almost completely empty. At 11. On a Saturday.
You'd probably get a huge crowd if you called it an Activist's Happy Hour and put pictures of dogs-equality-other things that will get the lezzies riled up.
LOL Darby, maybe.
I still think Phase 1 is a girls best chance to find a cluster of cuties.
