Ask A Straight Guy: Pale Young Gentlemen's Michael Reisenauer
If Pale Young Gentlemen's sound is any indicator, is it likely that their band name describes a good portion of their audience as well. The quintet hails from Madison, WI, and makes good use of Eastern European-sounding horns and string... and let's face it, neither area of the world is known for being sunkissed. But Tom Waits was pretty far from bronzed himself and no ones held it against him.
PYG's vocalist Michael Reienauer (center) was nice enough to answer some of our questions about being straight. Full interview and PYG mixtape below the fold.
The New Gay: When did you first realize you were straight?
Michael Reisenauer: I probably first realized this in the late 80's when my best friend and I would hide underneath his parents bed while paging through the lingerie section of a JC Penny catalog kissing our favorite bra models.
TNG: What is your least favorite stereotype about straight people?
MR: That straight people only know about gay culture from reading Savage Love.
TNG: What obligations, if any, do you feel that you have to the gay community?
MR: I don't have any obligation to anybody, Mister.
TNG: What are the biggest challenges faced by a straight guy in today's culture?
MR: Finding something actually sexy in the lingerie section at JC Penny.
TNG: If you had to "go gay" for one member of the same sex, who would it be?
MR: Christian Bale. But only if the Batman costume was involved.
TNG: Given the seemingly endless number of "indie"bands in existence today, how do you think you set yourself apart from the crowd?
MR: Earnestness.
TNG: Finally, why should Washington, DC come out and see you play tonight?
MR: We use our instruments in compelling ways.
