Ask A Straight Girl: Love Is All's Josephine Olausson

If you're having trouble finding coffee in the district this weekend, it's probably because Gothenberg, Sweden's Love is All requisitioned all of it for their upcoming live show. Playing tomorrow at the Rock and Roll Hotel, LIA carry a remarkable amount of energy for being from a city that Jens Lekman often describes as a monochromatic heck on earth. Jose Gonzalez hails from there, as does last Homo/Sonic's Little Dragon, so this is just one more chance to check out the supposed oxymoron that is Swedish diversity.
LIA's frontwoman Josephine Olausson was nice enough to answer some of our questions about being straight. Check out the full interview and an LIA mixtape below the fold.
Love is All play tomorrow at The Rock and Roll Hotel. Show starts at 9:30. $12.
The New Gay: When did you first realize you were straight?
Josephine Olausson: Probably when i was about five years old and kept on having secret crushes on ski instructors, tv hosts, fellow preschool students and others.
TNG: What is your least favorite stereotype about straight people?
JO: That we all strive for the same life with a big house, 2 kids, big car, a dog and all sorts of material things to keep our minds numb.
3. What obligations, if any, do you feel that you have to the gay community?
JO: I really don't feel like I have any.
TNG: What are the biggest challenges faced by a straight person in today's culture?
JO: Maybe to realize that your choice of lifestyle doesn't necessary apply to everyone around you.
TNG: If you had to "go gay" for one member of the same sex, who would it be?
JO: Purely for looks - Julianne Moore.
TNG: Given the seemingly endless number of "indie" artist in existence today, how do you think you set yourself apart from the crowd?
JO: We're faster and louder and less grumpy than most others.
TNG: Finally, why should Washington, DC come out and see you play tonight?
JO: See above.
