Tonight! Bellafea, The Shondes, Trophy Wife @ Black Cat

Seemingly in the tradition of Des Ark's louder period, North Carolina spews forth the co-ed post-punk trio, Bellafea (haircut hero and guitar / vocals Heather McEntire pictured). They're playin tonight, along with Brooklyn's klezmer-inspired queercore The Shondes, who are getting hyped with comparisons to Sleater-Kinney. Personally, I think the Shondes have more of a carnival-sound than riot-grrl, thanks to some expert fiddlin' by trans-man violinist, Elijah Oberman. Filling out the night's queer-splosion of noise is D.C.'s Trophy Wife, with Exotic Fever Records headmistress Katy Otto on drums and Diane F. on guitar and vox. These kids play loud as shit--their only other previous gig being a lunchroom full of girls rock campers where I could barely hear Diane's singing--I'm psyched for their first official show.
