April Music Roundup
The cruelest month, indeed. Though I warned you to get your tickets early, there is a large chance that many of you will be missing the sold-out Hot Chip and New Pornographers' shows at the 9:30 Club. Luckily, there are many other bands coming in this month to assuage the grief.
So, below the fold, your semi-comprehensive, semi-sensical, fully subjective guide to good April concerts...and a couple early May ones.
APRIL:
4/7:
-The Dirty Projectors: Oddly appealing (or appealingly odd) Brooklyn band whose last album consisted entirely of Black Flag covers. (Black Cat)
4/10:
-Margaret Cho: Not a musical performance, but it's Margaret Cho! I'd be remiss not mention her. She appears on the 11th too. (Warner Theater)
-Yeasayer: Ben described them as "Fleetwood Mac and Queen meeting in India and making a baby on the back of an elephant." (Black Cat)
-Joe Jackson: '80's artist best known for "Is She Really Going Out With Him" is also, who knew, a homo. (930)
4/11:
-Hot Chip: Sold out, but I warned you....(930)
4/12:
-Nada Surf: The band who did "Popular" is still around, and still playing affable indie pop. (930)
-Black Keys: The late show at 930 are these White Stripes-esque blues-rockers. They also play on the 13th. (930)
4/14, 15:
-The New Pornographers: They're both sold out, but I warned you...(930)
4/17:
-Kate Nash: Basically Lily Allen. But Lily Allen's pregnant and not touring, so take what you can get. (930)
-Autechre: Minimalist techno, for people who find leaky faucets sonically appealing. (Black Cat)
4/18:
-Imperial China: The best kind of noise rock. And their frontman's cute. (Rock and Roll Hotel.)
4/22:
-Lou Reed: This one's already sold out, but I would suck dick for tickets. I would even suck Lou's dick, and that thing's been in Laurie Anderson. (930)
4/23:
-Tapes N' Tapes: Minneapolis indie band that won't make you fall asleep or feel sensitive. (930)
4/24:
-Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin: A good friend of mine from college once went on a date with their drummer, and they surely have the best band name of anything coming in April. (Black Cat)
4/25:
-Destroyer: Crazy, sometime- New Pornographer Dan Bejar brings his own band to town. Confusing lyrics ensue. (Black Cat)
-Son Volt: In 1993, alt-country forebears Uncle Tupelo broke up. Half of the member became Wilco, the most beloved indie band there is. The other half became Son Volt, and soldier on. (930)
4/26:
-Jay Reatard: Sounds like the Clash, and has my second favorite band name of the month. (Black Cat)
-The B-52s: They're back! "Love Shack" annoys me too, but everything else about this band is pretty awesome. (930)
4/27:
-Urge Overkill: The band who did the cover of Neil Diamond's "Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon." Remember? It was in Pulp Fiction. (930)
4/29:
-Atmosphere: Indie Hip-hop? How could that be? All I know is my friend Nat got one of their lyrics tattooed on himself, and it looked really hot. But most of that had to do with his body. (930)
MAY:
5/1:
-RJD2: If you've heard Ghostwriter, you love Ghostwriter. His other songs are good too. (930)
5/2:
-The Kills: A trans-Atlantic duo that do grimy glam-rock. I'm excited about this one. (Black Cat)
5/6:
-Midnight Juggernauts: Australian band that is the closest thing to ELO anyone of us will see in our lifetimes...and I DO NOT mean that as an insult. (930)
