With respect to the Jesus comment, there's no real controversy over whether he existed. Tacitus, for instance, in his Annals of Imperial Rome while discussing the reign of Tiberius, notes that during this period a criminal in Judea named Christ was executed and that for some reason the whole business was causing quite a ruckus throughout the Empire.
