Your Monday Upper: Prop 8 Edition
Mondays Suck. So every Monday TNG brings you a fun video to ease the pain. Except this Monday, when we bring you potentially inspiring or frustrating video to make you thinks. I promise that next Monday we'll be back to the usual goofery.
TNG reader Eric Ngadiman sent us this video footage that he took at Saturday's marriage equality protest. The purple-haired woman speaking in the beginning was Peggie Sue Noper, who runs Dyke Night at the DC Eagle. Her speech was an early highlight of the protest, as was the beginning of the rain storm which didn't deter the thousands of protesters from making their voices heard. Unfortunately, there wasn't anyone around to listen.
An unexplained last minute route change (see map below the fold) took the march off of Pennsylvania Ave and on to a path that lead us through the mall and along the tidal basin, so that the only time we were seen by the public was when we marched north on 17th St from the mall to the White House. I assume this was out of the organizers hands, but it was frustrating to have all of our hope and anger in one place with no one out of our community present to witness it and have their mind changed.
That fact just further underscores the fact that Saturday's demonstration was only the first step in what I hope will be a long and vocal battle for equal rights.

The change of the march route was negotiated by the Metropolitan Police Department just before the march set off on Saturday afternoon. Though it took us down the mall rather than up Pennsylvania Avenue it gave the tourists a chance to cheer us on, which many did and gave us an unobstructed walk up 17th St to H.
Hey there Zack:
What a fantastic damn turnout and hey, thanks for the compliment. I was really pleased that we had not only a ton of queers but also lots and lots of straight allies.
Just an FYI: my name is Peggy Sue. The word Noper is a joke I put online when facebook required a last name on signup. Of course, if you wanna stick to that convention you can call me Peggy Sue YeahRight this time. :)
