Ask a Straight Girl: Yelle
I really want to say that Yelle, the stage name of french singer Julie Budet, makes songs that are about partying and fucking. Given that their lyrics are all in French, though, it's hard to say for sure. While any music videos that feature sexualized gym routines or dancing, person-sized hairdryers probably aren't about the quest for world peace, my dismal high school French grades leave me unable to know for sure.
All I do know is that Ce Jeu could be in sanskrit and I'd still listen to it. Dare you to only play it once. I also just found out that I have an extra ticket. If anyone out there in TNG-ville wants to join me, just send an email to Zack@thenewgay.net.
Yelle was nice enough to answer some of our questions about being straight. Full email interview and Yelle mixtape below the fold.
Yelle plays the 9:30 Club tonight at 11:40. $20.
The New Gay: When did you first realize you were straight?
Yelle: When I kissed a boy and I liked it, I liked it.
TNG:What is your least favorite stereotype about straight people?
Y: Straight guys who are proud to be friends with gay people, like it was an effort. You know what I mean?
TNG: What obligations, if any, do you feel that you have to the gay community?
Y: I don't feel any obligations to the gay people, as I don't feel any obligations to nobody! Just about having fun with everybody!
TNG: What are the biggest challenges faced by a straight guy in today's culture? [Note: I fucked up and asked her about straight guys, not girls, here. But I still like the answer.]
Y: It's difficult to see that most of the gays are sexy!
TNG:If you had to "go gay" for one member of the same sex, who would it be?
Y: Scarlett Johansson
TNG: Given the seemingly endless number of "indie" bands in existence today, how do you think you set yourself apart from the crowd?
Y: I don't really feel indie, actually. My music is quite pop, no?
TNG: Finally, why should Washington, DC come out and see you play tonight?
Y: Washington should come to dance and sing. We gonna have FUN!

Is this a legit interview?
It was an email interview, but yeah, those are all her actual answers.
