Am I The Only One Who Finds This Offensive?

This post was submitted by TNG reader "Sam."
For many DC natives, Late Night Shots is quite old news. For the benefit of the uninitiated, it is a website and social group which bills itself as "a closed social network that allows you to explore your city's social landscape and bar scene." A closer inspection reveals that this description is, ahem, extremely charitable.
Thanks to The City Paper, and at least one mole working for Wonkette, considerably more is known about this "members-only" club. In a nutshell, it's an old boys-style group that wallows in blatant and unapologetic racism, sexism, and elitism, and whose membership includes none other than the Bush twins. Leaks from their private message boards are eyebrow-raising at best, and infuriating far more often.
So why care? "Let the little pricks have their clubhouse," you say. I would have agreed with you up until this point. Take a gander at the invitation for their latest event, scheduled tonight at Smith Point in Georgetown.
Oh yes indeed, that's for real. Publicizing and hosting an event like this anywhere is remarkably hateful, and doing it in a city with a solid African-American majority is simply beyond the pale.
I've noticed on a rare occasion (*wink*) that contributors and commenters on TNG have a passion for fighting racial inequality and stereotypes, and that led me to think that perhaps a few of you might be interested in this little tidbit.
If you're riled up, the event is tonight at 10PM, and Smith Point is a public establishment. Had I known sooner, and had the resources, I may have arranged for a group to crash this little soiree. Failing that, I'm sure that Smith Point would be happy to field your emails, phone calls, or letters regarding their decision to cater to this crowd of lovely, upstanding youth.

In college I worked in the editorial staff of a humor magazine and we constantly had to judge the line between edgy humor and what went too far into the offensive realm. Honestly, I don't agree with your outrage. I see it as simply satirizing hip hop culture (Notice Flava Flav being used as the extreme example of hip hop culture). I don't know anything about this club other than what you had stated, so you may be right that there is a problem with racism within the club, but I don't think this ad/event is proof of that.
they have a list. you would not have been able to get in the front door.
yeah, i don't know. would it be offensive for me to put on some flashy glasses with big attached fake nose and a stupid hat? and what if i then got busy in a burger king bathroom?
yeah, keep reading wonkette and keep the ire up. also, check the potomac south of georgetown. red neck yacht club party bargin, with nothing but dave matthews bland as far as the ear can hear.
in a way i appreciate LNS, because they provide documentation for the extreme levels of douchiness possible among the young gop'ers. shred the pow' dudes! wtf
I (unfortunately) went to Smith Point a few months ago. I witnessed a drunk girl go up to one of the bouncers who was trying to get everyone out since they were closing and told him to "go back to Africa." I went up to her and she told me to mind my business because "I'm not even black" (in fact I'm mixed race, half African-American). That should give you a good idea of the type of people who frequent that place.
Oh and by the way Anonymous is correct, Smith Point is a members only bar. You have to be on their exclusive guest list (yeah right) or be with someone who is to get in.
i agree with chris allen. i fail to see what's offensive about this ad (more than the fact that i find flava flav offensive). what do you, sam, find offensive about it? you provide no analysis to support your conclusion...
Actually, any establishment that serves alcohol becomes a "private" establishment and can refuse entry to anyone for any reason.
i dont really find this offensive since it is a hip hop night and he is a hip hop artist.
LNS is extremely offensive though. read any thread the members post and you can see how racist, sexist, and homophobic everyone on that site is. but then again any profile site that asks you what country club, fraternity/sorority you belong to screams DUDE BRO. most of the people on this site stay away from adams morgan because they find it "too ghetto." i can almost hear wonder showzen in my head saying "whiiiiiiiiiite peoplllllllle"
ps - LNS has inspired its own DC reality show in the vain of mtvs "the hills." no joke. what is the name they went with?
Blonde Charity Mafia
I am very offended. How can you just ignore 50's through 70's hop hop? And what about 2000's?
