Weekend Art Roundup
Here are a couple events of note:
Tonight, hit up the DCAC for 1460 Wallmountables, where you can pick up inexpensive — and decent — art. The show has some interesting parameters, which makes it fun: artists must create works that fit into 2' x 2' spaces, and can display work in up to four spaces. There's a $100 prize for the artist with the best use of space, so get ready for some really innovative pieces. The opening ifrom 7-9 p.m. at 2438 18th St., NW.
Also tonight: Hillyer Art Space holds an open mic night from 7-9 p.m. Sign up at 6 p.m. 9 Hillyer Court, NW.
Some museum shows I like around town:
• Martin Puryear, Afghanistan: Hidden Treasures from the National Museum, Kabul, and Richard Misrach: On the Beach (above) at the National Gallery of Art
• The Cinema Effect: Illusion, Reality, and the Moving Image at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden
• Zaida Ben-Yusuf: New York Portrait Photographer at the National Portrait Gallery
What else is going on around town? What other shows have people been checking out?

It might be too late, but the International Youth Slam Poetry Competition is happening in town. I was at the semi-finals today and it was AMAZING. Brilliant minds, brilliant poetry. www.youthspeaks.org for more information...
