California Marriage Update

This post was submitted by Regan, who is interested in covering legal issues for TNG.

(The video above is from a local Bay Area newscast about the initial ruling.)

The California Supreme Court yesterday (Wednesday) unanimously denied a request to stay it's May 15 decision allowing same-sex marriage. The court also denied a rehearing of the case.

The denial means that the right to marry might only be extended to same-sex couples between June 17 and November 4, when California voters will decide a ballot initiative that would amend the California constitution to limit marriage as between a man and a woman.

Whether marriages issued between now and November will have a positive or negative impact on equality remains to be seen. Will Californians see same-sex married couples and realize they aren't all that scary? Or will Adam and Steve wedding announcements get conservatives out to the polls in droves? I wonder whether same-sex couples looking to get married in California would postpone their wedding if doing so would help the odds of defeating the November ballot initiative, even if doing so would risk them not being able to get married at all if the initiative passed. Even if they would, should they?
