SHIFTdc's Kickoff Dance Party - Feb. 28
TNG Events Editor Jolly submits this post. Weekend party hopping is about to get even easier. SHIFTdc, where indie rock, electro, and pop meet, is having its inaugural dance party this Saturday at Cobalt. The event's organizers say they "look forward to an evening where the bitter, dividing lines often drawn in the social stratosphere are blurred. We hope for an atmosphere where people can revel in a genuine sense of acceptance (and even some androgynous ambiguity), because the music draws no lines. Come. Dance. Drink. Escape. F*** the rest."
Oh, and TNG's own Michael and Zack will be guest DJing the event. Show them some love and get your dance on this Satuday.

Did I read that flyer correctly? An alternative to the "alternative" dance party??
Wow, this is really getting uncool.
Amen. Isn't the alternative to the alternative the mainstream? Alas, another party thrown by DJs hell-bent on the semantic subterfuge of that heavily used sphincter of a word, alternative. At least be smart or creative when you rape an idea. Maybe something like this?
SHIFT: Wolf Lube for a Sheepskin Condom.
Bitter Queen!!! I don't think you'll be allowed to shift.
The bar, itself, is merely a prop, it seems. The promoter is taking over (like LURe last week did for us girls, and it was fun!) and using the space at their disposal.
I think it will be a good chance to experience Cobalt in a different, positive light, with a dj who seems to really like indie rock, electropop, etc.
There's no reason to just attack the ad as uncool without looking at its goal. I've helped promote different "alternative" nights, and everyone hates the word, but it gets the idea across quicker than any other, and is never the central idea or theme- so, I understand what they're saying.
It looks, if nothing else, worth going for the fact that the drinks specials are decent, the music won't suck, the Shift bartenders include a female bartender (all clothed), and Michael & Zack will be supporting them.
This really is getting a bit old. It looks like the "promoter" is just trying to cash in on the successes of other, more original parties. There's nothing alternative about this, it's actually pushing the whole scene mainstream. These losers should come up with a new idea instead of regurgitating other people's.
knowing the two people running the event, i can tell you that they are just trying to have a fun night of their own, playing the music they like, and they hope people like it too. that's a bitter, hasty, and generalizing claim. also,to call them losers is so uncalled for, considering you know nothing and are simply spitting out venom on ignorance. the last thing the community needs is to shut the door on the face of something that could bring more people together, on a regular basis. so, choose to not attend, all you want, but don't defame something of which you know little.
i agree with the last comment. with cobalt, be-bar, and what's that other bar's name (halo?) jumping on the bandwagon of indie-themed parties, the notion of "alternatives" to mainstream queer bars is quickly dissolving and becoming meaningless. but on the other hand, these newcomers are also challenging the blatant snobbishness of both straight and queer indie scenes that keeps out those that don't listen to the right obscure bands and/or dress in the indie uniform of the moment.
Who IS running this event?
I agree with the above. It should at least be a decent time and a nice chance to do something new.
the only thing more exhausting than people complaining about whether or not something is "alternative" is them complaining about whether or not it's "mainstream". what is this, 1994?
Who are the organizers for this event?
Apparently, "The Mhajr" and "Lt. Lush" are the organizers, whatever that means.
the deejay is fantastic. i've gotten my hands on a number of his mix cds. it will be worth it. you won't feel alienated and it will be a great time. try it and find out.
everyone knows that popular alternatives soon become mainstream.
