Rock Out to Repeal Prop 8 - TONIGHT

This post comes to us from Steve Scarlata, guitarist/singer/songwriter for local art-punk band The Mirror Script.

Whoever said rock and roll and politics don't mix was probably in a band that sucked.

Any form of art that precludes commenting on the state of the world or the state of people's lives can't really be worth much of your attention. From the Delta Blues to Chuck Berry to Punk Rock, there has always been a latent or even overt social commentary in most music. Naturally, this is a tradition that has flourished in a city like Washington, DC where the DIY aesthetic was practically born in the 1980s. Bands like Minor Threat or Government Issue demonstrated not only that music could have a message but that it also could be used as a means of bringing that message to fruition.

It is in this spirit that I decided to organize a Fight the Hate benefit show for the repeal of Prop 8 in California. I do not believe in sitting idly by as my rights and liberties are stripped away by agents of intolerance. If I can use music as a catalyst to organize and rally people to a cause, then the choice is clear and this is something that I simply must do. If you feel the same way, then join us at the Black Cat this Tuesday, February 24th and help raise money to contribute to the fight to repeal Prop 8. There will be rock and roll, there will be booze and there will be people. What more is there to ask for?

My plan is for this to hopefully be the first in a series of shows organized for this cause. I invite anyone and everyone who is willing to help to contact me.
