Don't Let Gainesville Legalize Discrimination

From TNG reader and concerned citizen, Jose.

I don't get it...

We rant, we rave, we march, we bitch...

But we don't do anything.

The post-Prop 8 madness got more dizzy queens around the country whipped up into a screaming frenzy than we've ever seen before. We were mad! We wanted our rights!

And now, just three months later, when a city in Florida is five weeks away from voting to strip employment protections for our community, we... well... we don't do much of anything.

I'm going to assume that the reason more people weren't at the phone bank that was organized for last night was because they didn't know about it. To give you the benefit of the doubt, I'll run down what's happening:

We're just four months off of losing in California. Conservative lawyers from Michigan, at the Thomas Moore Law Center have written language for a ballot that would remove protections based on sexual orientation and gender identity from the Gainesville City Charter. On March 24th, voters in Gainesville will be asked to vote on whether or not to amend their charter to 1) strip protections for the LGBT community and 2) ban the city from ever adding any other classes of people not protected by the state.

Proposed Amendment to City Charter Prohibiting the City from Providing Certain Civil Rights:

Shall the City Chapter Be Amended to prohibit the adoption or enforcement of ordinances, regulations, rules, or policies that provide protected status, preferences, or discrimination claims based on classifications, characteristics, or orientations not recognized by the Florida Civil Right Act? The act recognizes race, color, creed, religion, gender, national origin, age, handicap, marital and familial status. Additionally, this amendment voids existing ordinances concerning sexual orientation, gender identity, and other ordinances inconsistent with this amendment.

So... the new fight has already begun and the vote to legalize discrimination against our community is less than five weeks away. That about sums it up.

There are phone banks happening every week at the HRC's 1640 Rhode Island Avenue building, but no one gets called unless you show up.

Last night I was hoping to see 50 people there. I see far more at every TNG event, more RSVPs for Solly's, Homosonic, Taint, and Mixtape, and FAR more people commenting whenever there's something to bitch about, than the handful of students that showed up. Here's a perfect opportunity to use that pent-up frustration you had when we lost Prop 8 to actually do something.

Will you come? I am asking my friends to please show support for your brothers and sisters who will have their rights taken away in Gainesville. Regardless of what you think about HRC or phone banking, your family needs your help. The election is March 24th and voter turnout will be very small. That's why we need to locate those who are supportive to come out and vote no.

Will you show up next Tuesday at 6pm and help fight discrimination against you? To see what we're up against, look at this awful ad.

Or... will you wait until it's over and rant, rave, march, bitch, and... point the finger at the same place that asked for your help?

I hope to see you there.

Just to be clear, are you randomly calling eligible voters in Gainesville, or are you calling those already identified as on our side? I would be wary of just phoning a bunch of strangers - I come from OH, and we had a bunch of well-intentioned British voters call us to ask us not to vote for Bush in 2004. It felt a bit antagonistic, and I just want to make sure we wouldn't be doing the same thing here....

Why piecemeal rights?
Why NOT federal equality now?

In the World of Business NO ONE would be able to sell two "packages" that are radically-different in quality for the same price.

* The "Hetero-package" comes complete with legal rights & protections to keep your family safe and free from unnecessary, cruel suffering.

* The "NOT-hetero-package" comes without those rights; your family is a piece of dog sh*t in the eyes of the law.

Yet both packages cost the same on April 15th! And gays are STILL buying the dog sh*t packages.

How much longer will THAT nonsense continue ?

re: Anonymous 12:17pm
preaching to the choir is not going to help us win, hence my columns about reaching out to build new alliances. I understand if you are personally uncomfortable making the calls, but, in addition to motivating our base, we have to get other people on our side.

re: John Bisceglia
Wars are won one battle at a time. Federal Civil Rights laws were passed after years of winning victories at the local level and SCOTUS cases. How are we going to win a federal victory if we can't win one in California? :-) Just wondering.

How much longer will THAT nonsense continue?
I'm open to ideas on how to fix it. You should write a post for TNG sharing your perspective.

Touche.

I certainly do my fair share of bitching, so herewith is my RSVP for March 3. (I've already emailed Karl.Bach@hrc.org too.)

So that's one. Anyone else?

Would it be more enticing if we all decamped for a drink after an evening of talking to strangers? Because I have a feeling that's where I'm going when the clock strikes 9 :)

"Wars are won one battle at a time" - that's why I say go for federal equality. Period. Then we do not have to worry about 50 different fights in our one "united" states. My problem is that we are attempting to "win" rights. F*CK THAT. (sorry, potty mouth here) I say TAKE those rights. If government EXCLUDES us, then it cannot expect us to INCLUDE it every April 15th.

Are you FED UP with "having to be liked enough" for equality?

Do you believe equality is OURS TO TAKE and refuse to beg for it?

Amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to include Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Gender Expression!

I will email the person at HRC for tomorrow's phone bank.

Personally, I had a Board meeting last week, so I could not attend.

Please do not think we all a bunch of apathetic queens. We do have competing priorities.

I understand about multiple conflicts, we are all adults with schedules. I personally can't make it tonight, I am working late and I am sick. What I am saying is that out of the hundreds of people that showed up to march, it was very sad to see just a handful of people there. Spread the word.
