Don't Forget: Homo/Sonic is Tomorrow!
This post was written by TNG cofounder Zack.
This weekend is a busy one for the DC alterna-queer set. TNG's co-ed queer dance party, Homo/Sonic, is taking place on Saturday Night. So is MixTaint, a combination of two of the best existing DC parties. So what's a homo to do?
We here at TNG are super excited about My Dear Disco, the queer-fronted 7-piece dance band that's driving all the way down from Michigan (in a veggie-oil powered bus!) to rock our faces off. They come on at 10. After that resident Homo/Sonic DJs Michael and Zack come on to play their usual mix of classics, new favorites and pretty much anything that you request.
Details for the party are below. Please come check us out tomorrow and, of course, have a good weekend.
Saturday Feb. 21, All Ages, $10
Doors at 9:30, Band at 10, DJs around 11:15.

I just got back from HomoSonic, it was my first time there and I was very disappointed with the music played. It seems to me that the DJ's were more concerned about playing what they want to hear instead what the crowd wanted to dance. The music played were very up and down, not keeping up the crowd dancing, the transitions between songs were very bad (maybe because they were playing the songs from their Apple computer?)
Anyway, I was hoping to go there and dance all night long but with the type of music they played I found hard to do it.
What intrigues me is that the DJ's in general (and the ones at Homosonic) have an instant feedback of their work by looking at the dance floor. If the crowd is not dancing or the dance floor is getting empty is because the music playing is not good and they are not doing their job of keeping people dancing. However that seems the least worry the DJ's had and the flow of the musics played were very disconnected making the people constantly stop dancing to the point that it was not even fun.
I hope that either the DJ's change their attitude and focus on doing their job better by playing good dancing music, or have some different DJ's play next time.
I understand where you're coming from. I haven't been to Homo/Sonic yet but I attended my first Mixtape in Adams Morgan last month and the DJs (Matt Bailer and Shea Van Horn) played amazing music. I actually stayed much longer b/c the music was so damn good. Irony: the place was so crowded no one could dance but that was ok b/c I think it's better to face each other and talk...while incredibly good music spins. I was very surprised because normally DJs play crappy stuff.
There was another MixTaint last night but I couldn't make it. I'm kinda disappointed b/c I want to hear more of their stuff. Looking forward to the next one.
Oh man. Where do I begin? I'll start by saying that I actually left a dinner party early to see the band. It was listed on your website as a start time of 10. Not so much. More like 11. Normally, I would expect a delay, but to say doors at 9:30, band at 10:00, and DJ at 11:30. But I'm guessing this happened because of the crowd count at the beginning was abysmal. There were at most a dozen or two people. I have never seen that happen at a show in DC. How embarrassing for DC to have such a great act greeted by empty space! I was mortified.
Granted, the crowd picked up toward the end (still less than 100 people I think, half of which showed interest in the band). And part of this crowd finally snapped out of their "I'm not dancing or having fun" coma, but I still felt like going up to the band members and apologizing. What on earth were the organizers/promoters of this event thinking?
I actually invited several friends who showed up and high tailed it out of there after half an hour. (I joined them around 12:30) The music being "spun" actually killed the vibe the band had. I don't know. I was terribly disappointed by last night. At least the band rocked and the drinks were strong.
