Ask a Straight Girl: Those Darlins’ Jesse Darlin
Another great "Ask a Straight Guy/Girl" submitted by Kasey, a TNG reader who misses the Nashville music scene. The first song on Those Darlins recently released EP is appropriately titled “Wild One.” Jessi, Kelley, and Nikki Darlin three friends from Murfreesboro, TN share a love of traditional country music, booze, and bloomers. Kelley and Jessi Darlin met while volunteering with the Southern Girls Rock Camp, Nashville’s version of 'Girls Rock!' Nikki Darlin and her baritone ukulele joined shortly thereafter, completing the band.
Jessi Darlin took a second of her time to answer some questions for TNG and as you can see, her answers live up to the band’s lyrics, “if you don’t want a wild one, don’t hang around with me.”
TNG: When did you first realize you were straight?
JD: Well, for me it was when I came out of the womb... The doctors confirmed "yeah she's straight as a board." In fact I was so straight they had to break a curve back in my spine.
TNG: What is your least favorite stereotype about straight people?
JD: God, I get this all the time... "I mean I love straights and all that, but they just don't really know how to party." Listen people, being "able to party it down" is not gender or sexuality specific! It is pure individual personality.
TNG: What obligations, if any, do you feel that you have to the gay community?
JD: To make them laugh.
TNG: What are the biggest challenges faced by a straight person in today's culture?
JD: Eating breakfast, smoking cigarettes, and working normal jobs. Fighting addiction I think is harder for the straight person. And shaving your legs, I just can’t bring myself to do it.
TNG: If you had to "go gay" for one member of the same sex, who would it be?
JD: Linwood, our drummer.
TNG: Given the seemingly endless number of "indie" artist in existence today, how do you think you set yourself apart from the crowd?
JD: Hairier. Smarter. Prettier. No not really. I think we just go for our own thing and are very comfortable in our own skin and people just feel that vibe, and like it. It rubs off too.
TNG: Finally, why should Washington, DC come out and see you play tonight?
JD: CUZ WE KNOW HOW TO PAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
