Ticket Giveaway: Mousetrap @ The Black Cat

Know what I hate? Free stuff. Just kidding. I love free stuff. That's why TNG is giving away so much of it. The first of many upcoming ticket giveaways is for this Saturday's Mousetrap, The Black Cat's monthly brit-pop dance party. It's not a queer party per se, but you are guaranteed to at least find one large group of homos up by the stage and several same-sex makeouts scattered throughout the dance floor. (You might also recall Michael and I DJing there on Pride.)

Anyone who wants to save themselves $20 by winning a pair of tickets just has to answer this simple question: What is the best thing you've ever gotten for free, and how did you get it? Please leave your answer both as a comment and as an email to Zack@thenewgay.net. Most original or amusing response gets the tickets. Deadline is tomorrow (Friday) at 3 p.m.

Mousetrap, Saturday, Jan. 10, 9:30 PM to 2:30 AM, Black Cat, 1811 14th St NW

Also, below the fold you can listen to a playlist of some songs usually played at Mousetrap. Enjoy!

My sister was in the studio audience of a talk show during an annual holiday prize give away. Feeling generous or simply not finding a personal need for all her wares, she gave them to the family. I really wanted the KitchenAid mixer, but she gave it to my mother. I got a really nice cappuccino machine, but I don't drink coffee. So it is sitting unopened in my closet. The unfortunate thing is that the KitchenAid is still in it's box because my mother is afraid that she might accidently stick her hand in the bowl while it is mixing and end up with a mangled claw.

Coming in late here...

When I was a boy scout, at the tender young age of 12, I was sitting around on a Friday night with nothing to do. My father and I were listening to a talk radio show (back in the day when there was such a thing as moderate talk radio) and they were having a scavenger hunt. One of the things they asked for was a boy scout to come down to the studio and recite the Boy Scout Oath. Ten minutes later we were on our way to downtown Chicago. We got into a fender bender on the way down, but there was no actual damage to either car, so we continued on. I stood in front of the streetside studio and, with a modest crowd watching, did one of the best recitations a nervous pubescent boy could give.

They were so impressed that we had driven 40 minutes to the studio just to do this--on Friday night--that I was given a big list of prizes: Ferarah Pan Candy (the makers of Lemonheads and the like), free pizza gift certificates, tickets to a Chicago Cubs game, a couple of music CDs of artists neither of us had heard of, and a golf store gift certificate for my dad (who has never golfed in his life).

And I still have the cassette tape to prove it.

And the winner is...

Michael H! Even though he was late, and our other Michael had a great story, Mr. H won his way into my heart by invoking both Chicago and Lemonheads.

Other Michael- thank you for playing and stay tuned for other giveaways in the near future.
