Portraits of Power

This is William Casby. He was born into slavery in 1863, in Algiers, Louisiana. The photo was taken by Richard Avedon in 1963. I highly recommend that you view this photo in person.

The Corcoran Gallery currently feature’s photographer Richard Avedon’s work in a show called Portraits of Power. The show ends on January 25th, so check it out while you still can. Avedon’s work is whimsical, profound, and powerful—well worth the price of admission. Also, on your way to the restroom downstairs check out the gut-punching collection of post-Katrina photographs.
