Weekend Events: Homo/Sonic (and My Birthday)
The week is nearly over. The weather is becoming cool and crisp (kind of). And my birthday's tomorrow. It's time to celebrate. Definitely check out Homo/Sonic tonight, and read on for the rest of your weekend plans.
Tonight:
- Homo/Sonic at the Black Cat: It's time for TNG's second co-ed queer dance party (that's also straight-friendly). Expect indie rock, dance-punk, britpop, and much m0re. Remember to send your song requests to homosonic@thenewgay.net -- this way you won't be able to complain about the music (but you can still complain about being alone in this cruel world). Get in the mood by checking out photos from the July Homo/Sonic, and RSVP on Facebook if you want. IMPORTANT: I want to see a lot of girls/ladies/queer/whatever tonight. Don't forget that Homo/Sonic is truly inclusive. Details: Black Cat, Backstage, 1811 14th St. NW, 9:30 p.m., $5, all ages.
- Wilder Benefit at BeBar: Read about local legend Don Wilder on TNG, and find out why you should support the Wilder Fund. Trust me: It's a good cause. Details: BeBar, 1318 9th St. NW, 10 p.m., $5, 18+.
- Mixtape at Dahlak: Take it easy Saturday afternoon because there's another alternative queer dance party this weekend. DJs Matt Bailer and Shea Van Horn will be spinning pop, new wave, acid house, and basically any other genre with a good beat. Read more about this monthly party on TNG, and check out the Mixtape Facebook page. Details: Dahlak, 1771 U St. NW, 10 p.m., free, 21+.
- Recover from two nights of dancing and drinking with mimosas and french toast.
- Jennifer O'Connor at Jammin Java: Vienna might seem far, but it's worth the trip to see out singer-songwriter Jennifer O' Connor perform, along with Hayden. She's touring in support of her latest album, Here With Me. The cover art features O'Connor nuzzling with her girlfriend, so she's definitely into girls. Check out some tracks on her MySpace page and website. Details: Jammin Java, 227 Mapple Ave. E., Vienna, 8 p.m., $14, all ages.

It's my birthday, too! Also, International Talk Like a Pirate Day. Arrrr.
Be:Bar is starting a charity event every Sunday, with proceeds from the bar going to a different organization every weekend.
Sunday, Sept 21st, 5pm until 9pm, Fashion Fights Poverty
FFP hopes to empower consumers, designers and citizens alike to fight poverty. Check their website:
http://fashionfightspoverty.org/
I know the weekend after that the recipient charity will be the DC AIDS Walk.
So far this events are billed for this fall only, but I think it's a laudable effort that we should patronize. If we are going to drink, let's drink for a good cause, no?
Karen, the pictures are killing me. Puppy is kind of cute though.
btw, happy birthday!
Hey, the pictures are the best part of the weekend preview!
I agree with Karen. If only we could somehow combine homo/sonic with kittens...
Is Homo/Sonic all ages or just 18+? I want to go with a few friends, but I won't be eighteen until December.
From the Black Cat website:
Black Cat events are all-ages. Patrons under 18 should have parental permission, and we prefer them to be accompanied by an adult. Please be aware that DC has a Curfew Law which affects those 17 and under. Curfew hours go into effect at 11:00pm Sunday-Thursday (weekdays) and at 12:00am on Friday and Saturday (weekends). If you are 17 or younger you must be out of the club by the times stated, unless accompanied by a parent.
And Alex, props to you and your friend for being out and open at such a young age. Come out and have a blast tonight.
I agree with Karen - let's see lots of ladies out tonight! There was a good showing last time, but I'm sure we can get even more out tonight.
re: Fashion Fights Poverty
There is almost no information on actual labor conditions, sourcing practices, standards, codes of conduct for these companies on the website. Anyone can claim to be an ethical company and that does not mean anything. Take for example EDUN which is one of the sponsors of this event. Their workers are not unionized and they are sketchy on details about working conditions: http://laborrightsblog.typepad.com/international_labor_right/2007/02/edun_unions_are.html
We should inquire with the companies involved in this effort about exactly where they source from, what their code of conduct is and if it is monitored, what their wages are, if they respect workers' right to organize and freedom of association, etc. Don't just take their "ethical" claims at face value. Plus, companies claiming to be eco, organic, etc. has nothing to do with worker rights and thus, reducing poverty.
