Urgent: Trans Rights Under Attack in D.C.
The D.C. Office of Human Rights is up to some bad tricks, threatening to rewrite parts of the District's Human Rights Act in ways that would discriminate against trans and genderqueer individuals. On the table are proposals that disregard community action to make jails less abusive to trans people, giving the Department of Corrections carte blanche to process trans folks as they see fit, and attempts to take away the rule that single person bathrooms should say "restroom", and be available to all.
Anyone who fought hard (and won) the battle to change bathroom signs to restroom knows that we have the power to affect queer policy in D.C.--you also know that all that hard work shouldn't be for naught. Take a minute and sign the petition to strike down the OHR's transphobic agenda, even if you've sent an email to the Office of Human Rights already. If you want to take even more action, come to the next DC Trans Coalition meeting this Tuesday, July 29th from 7:20-9pm to find out how you can get involved.
