Tour: Gay Poets of D.C. (6/21)

New York and San Francisco have usually gotten all the attention when it comes to American gay literature. And it’s true: the majority of significant gay writers seem to have spent time living in one of these two cities. But that focus ignores gay literary traditions in, for example, the South, Los Angeles, and our very own Washington D.C. D.C., in fact, could be considered a legitimate runner-up to NYC and S.F. in the nonexistent competition for the title of Gay Literary Capital. Now there's a chance to celebrate that heritage.

Thanks to the combined efforts of Beltway Poetry Quarterly and Split This Rock, the fantastic local poetry festival, there will be a walking tour tomorrow (Saturday) of sites in the Dupont Circle neighborhood linked to D.C. gay poets. Hosted and led by Dan Vera, this tour is going to cover some wonderful poets: black gay writer and activist Essex Hemphill, New York School poet Tim Dlugos, current local writer and teacher Richard McCann, and others.
There’s more information linked to the D.C. Center website . Running from 10:30 to noon, this event costs $5 and there is a limit on the number of participants (last I heard, there is still space available), so if you want to go, reserve your slot now!
