My heart is heavy with the news that Bo Diddley died today. Like Yves Saint Laurent, the fashion maven who put women in pants (who died yesterday), Diddley was a bona fide eccentric who wanted to make music his own way. He played the guitar like it were drums, incorporated "strange" instruments (like the electric violin) into his sound, and had female guitarists in his band. He was a musical revolutionary, and he inspired musicians from many genres, country to blues, heavy metal to punk rock.
