Review: December 15 Blowoff
TNG's nightlife team was too busy attending winter holiday parties this past weekend to make it to Blowoff on Saturday night. I asked a friend and TNG reader who I know attended to give us a quick summary. He warned me that he was exhausted from working a shift at the Clarendon Apple Store that day, and got lit enough to not remember much about the music they were playing. But the recollections he could muster are available below the fold.
The talk of the town at Saturnight's monthly Blowoff (which I kept messing up and calling Blowfest/Blowout) was both the weather and 9:30's neighbor -- Town. Apparently between cold wet weather and all the townies down the street, the crowd [at Blowoff] was not big enough for some's taste. Being part country mouse and part city mouse, the absence of the townies didn't bother me much. In fact, the shirtless barrel chested hairy men at Blowoff provided a nice alternative to all the townies around. Warm and wet from plenty of holiday cheer and in the company of two friends, I had a fun morning dancing (in what some describe as the style of an oscillating octopus) enjoying the 9:30's x-mas tree, pondering why the Santa bear had mistletoe coming out of his bulging fly, and watching videos on multiple big screens.
[I've recently moved back to town], and Blowoff was a nice reintroduction back to DC and the gay nightlife that I usually avoid. Perhaps it was the cheer or the company I was with, but Blowoff exceeded my expectations. It wasn't entirely my scene, but, shared with two friends and multiple bottles of Yuengling, any party can be fun. Refreshingly absent from Blowoff were the glares and attitude that I usually associate with going out in DC. Blowoff was pretty laid back and let you do your own thing while enjoying time with your friends. Though, I cringe at the thought that four Metro Weekly and Blade photographs later, my face may be plastered across the rags around town.
Next month would I blow-off the Blowoff fest for something else? With the right friends and enough convincing it wouldn't be hard to get me back there.

yeah, i had fun. the crowd wasn't huge, but the music was pretty good. though groups of several people in what is essentially the same outfit turn me off, there was a pack of pretty cute hipster looking boys. a few hot man mountains. i got into a way too drunken conversation about battlestar galactica with some stranger at the end of the night, but otherwise didn't embarrass myself. a good night out.
some folks will migrate to town but blowoff has a large enough niche audience to continue to thrive. it's great to have all sorts of alternatives, don't you think? hell, sometimes you feel like hanging out w/friends and checking out the cute hipsters + sexy bears... and sometimes you wanna ogle at the hotties in town. the vibe is more relaxed at blowoff than town. looks alone don't seem to be the only currency but there's still plenty of sexy guys to make your head spin like linda blair in the exorcist.
