Saturday: A Different Kind of Concert

This Saturday at Phase 1, women will be turning out not just for a fun night out, but to raise money for a great cause. A Different Kind of Ladies Night, one of the foremost groups in the District for lesbians, is holding A Different Kind of Concert, a benefit to raise money for cancer. Mara Levi, Lindsay Bloom and Sarah Bolen will be performing, starting at 7:30 p.m.

Bridget Hieronymus, the brains behind ADKLN, fueled the concert as well.

“The idea came because my mom passed away in May of cervical cancer and on November 15 it'll be the six-month mark of her death,” she says, “I wanted to do something to honor her and remember her... as well as all women touched by cancer. I also wanted a way to raise some money to donate to cancer research as well as educate the women of D.C. on certain cancers and also provide them information on where they could go for more information and to get health exams in D.C.”

Lindsay Bloom performs this weekend at Phase 1 as part of A Different Kind of Concert.

Hieronymus said she pulled the event together in a short amount of time.

“Because I had thrown concert events before, I had some names of women I could reach out to who might volunteer their time,” she says, “Luckily, the first three women (Mara Levi, Sarah Bolen and Lindsay Bloom) I asked said yes, and I had that taken care of. Phase 1 was also great and agreed to let me have the event there.”

A Different Kind of Concert, which Hieronymus expects will draw a large crowd, and which will feature free keg beer from 7:30-10:30 p.m. and giveaways from Righteous Babe Records, is ultimately about remembering and celebrating women touched by cancer.

“You don't really realize just how many people are affected by cancer until you lose somebody from it,” she says, “There are hundreds and hundreds of women touched by cancer, and it's so important that we celebrate, honor and remember them. This night is for those women. Raising money is great, but on Saturday night, I'll be remembering my mom and celebrating her life."

Phase 1 is located at 525 8th St., SE. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the concert begins at 7:30 p.m. There’s a $15 cover with all proceeds going to cancer research.
