Natalie Illum let us know about Mothertogue's 9th Anniversary Spokenword Slam with Sini Anderson. Check them out at their website. They will celebrate its 9th anniversary on October 24th with a slam-style event. Mothertongue's organizers' drew the idea from their popular Anti-Valentine's Day Slam, which occurs in February. Instead of an anti-sentimental theme, slammers are asked to bring poems that are either inspired and empowering, or ones that are challenging or at risk of not being heard, similar to mothertongue's mission.
Don't forget the XinDC event this Saturday, October 20th at Be Bar (1318 9th St NW, WDC). The event runs from 6-10pm, so this shouldn't interfere with your late-night plans. Be sure to say hi to Sean Welker after you check out his work.
Sabri makes some really sweet pottery. You can check out his wares at his website.
Jeff over at SpeakEasyDC sent us this spooktacular option for next weekend:
"Halloween is coming and what better time for stories, fire, and s'mores. We are renting a bus and driving out to Patuxent River Park where will have a campfire and tell true (and perhaps not so true) tales of ghosts, the supernatural, and the paranormal. Please consider telling a story of your own. It will be a very chill setting and the more stories the better. No stage fright."Saturday, Oct 27, 2007
Meet at Station 9 (1438 U St) at 7:30pm
BYOB, no costumes (it freaks Meredith out)
$31 per person or 2-for-$50. Buy tix in advance. Seating is limited, but if we get enough people we may try for a second bus. So pass on the word!
BMC Info shop sent us this, for our ass-kicking lesbians readership:9 week Women's Self Defense Class that the Infoshop is sponsoring along with the Domestic Violence Resource Center and taught by Defend Yourself!
If you can make it up to Baltimore this weekend, check out The 2007 Mid-Atlantic Radical Bookfair, bringing together radical and independent publishers, distributors, bookstores, and authors for a weekend of workshops, panel discussions, and performances, all free and open to the public, will take place on October 20th and 21st. As an added bonus this year, they're also organizing a Radical Film Festival on October 19th to kick things off.
