Weekend Art Roundup

Reader, I'm back. And here are a few art events going on around town this weekend.

Museum Exhibits:

I recommend Afghanistan: Hidden Treasures from the National Museum, Kabul, which opened at the National Gallery of Art on May 25. There are some beautiful objects on display, from jewelry to sundials to statues. As an added bonus, the Cafe is serving some Afghan dishes (I've tasted them twice and they're all delicious.) Also at the NGA is Richard Misrach: On the Beach, which I haven't seen yet, thanks to being out of town when the artist came through town, but I hope to see it soon. As it may be the closest I get to a beach all summer. Right, a crown from the Afghanistan exhibit.

Gallery Openings:

Hemphill Fine Arts opens Max Hirshfeld: Looking At Looking and Jacob Kainen: Paintings and Works on Paper 1939-1949. Opening reception is tonight from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at 1515 14th St., NW. The shows run through July 26.

Head to the Meat Market Gallery on Friday for a Transmedia art exhibit featuring artists from the US and Europe. The opening is followed by a party. 1636 17th St., NW.

Other Events:

This weekend is the Dupont-Kalorama Museum Walk, featuring free admission and activities. Check out museums like the Phillips Collection, one of my favorite art spots in the District.

The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden kicks off Summer Camp, a film series featuring campy movies. First screening is It Came From Beneath the Sea tonight at 7 p.m.
